REVERSING THE STIGMA
April is Alcohol Awareness Month. Founded and sponsored by NCADD, Alcohol Awareness Month was established in 1987 to help reduce the stigma so often associated with alcoholism by encouraging communities to reach out to the American public each April with information about alcohol, alcoholism and recovery. Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive disease, genetically predisposed and fatal if untreated. However people can and do recover. In fact, it is estimated that as many as 20 million individuals and family members are living lives in recovery!
The Rockland Council on Alcoholism & Other Drug Dependence (RCADD) and Friends of Recovery Rockland (FOR-R) will present a free viewing of the film documentary, “Reversing the Stigma”. The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) released the new documentary about addiction and recovery and the stigmas that surround them. “Reversing the Stigma” highlights the work being done in New York State to combat addiction and reminds viewers that addiction is a chronic disease that is treatable.
The film, narrated by acclaimed television journalist Laurie Dhue, and produced by OASAS and the New York State Media Service Center, profiles multiple people in various stages of recovery, who share their stories and experiences.
“There has been a long held belief that addiction only affects certain people, but the recent opioid epidemic has shown that it impacts people of all ages, genders, ethnicities, languages and religions,” said OASAS Commissioner Arlene González-Sánchez. “This documentary is key to helping people understand that addiction is a disease and recovery is possible.”
